How Long Should You Keep Makeup Products?

Have you ever questioned how long do makeup products last? Most of us buy many makeup products and forget about when we opened them and how long they should last. In some cases, people accidentally use expired lipsticks, eyeliners, and so on. In general, makeup and skincare products contain a lot of chemical substances and when it’s expired, they can be harmful to the skin and our body according to some studies.

Expired products are harmful to the body

Assuming that we use makeup products every day and if you calculate that number of chemicals per year, the amount will be huge. The more makeup and beauty products we use, the more chemicals we absorb through our skin everyday. That counts all makeup, skincare, and cleaning products for every day use. So it’s very important to always check the expiry date of makeup and skincare products you purchased. If you want to know the expiry date, check the batch code on a product.

Expiry date of makeup products

For mascara, it can be used between 3 to 6 months after opening. For blushes, it can be 12 to 18 months. Lipstick lasts about 18 months after opening. The foundation expiry date is 6 months, and eyeshadow lasts 12 months after opening. Shampoo and conditioner last 12 months. However, it’s always good to remember that when products start to lose their quality, you should not use them. For example, nail polish lasts 12 months but most of them dry out within one month and a half after opening. The same goes for mascara, most mascaras are good for 2 months and then it starts drying out. As for perfumes, they can last about 2 to 5 years after opening. Keep perfumes away from daylight and it’s best to store them in a darker place. When products are oxidized, they are harmful to the skin and cause allergies and other problems. Therefore, always check the expiry date of cosmetics.

Even though it’s nice to have tons of makeup products and plenty of choices, it’s smarter to keep only a few makeup items that can be used every day and to be minimalistic in terms of buying cosmetic products. Because they oxidize quickly after opening and if there are tons of products that we don’t use and it’s expired, it’s going to be a waste of money and we would need to throw them away.

Clean makeup brushes and sponges every week

We all know that makeup brushes and sponges carry a lot of bacteria and germs. So it’s crucial to clean your brushes and other makeup accessories once a week. Dirty brushes and sponges can cause skin infections. It’s also important to note that don’t share your mascara, eyeshadow, and other beauty accessories with other people. Because it can carry different kinds of bacteria and germs, and as a result of this, you may get eye infections and other skin diseases. So for health-wise, keep your beauty accessories and makeup products clean at all times. Another trick is to use a spatula when applying some cream and serum to your face. Most people don’t realize it and dip their fingers in a pot of cream. Don’t do that. Hands carry a lot of bacteria as well so it’s better to use a small spatula to get some cream.
